Shorebox

Healthy and delicious chef-prepared meal, ready to eat in minutes.

Challenge

Having run a successful catering company, the founders of Shorebox were no strangers to food services, but they had never created a digital product before.

To launch their new venture, a meal delivery service, they had the delicious food covered. They hired me for everything else: a name, a brand, an app, and an internal tool to power the operation.

Approach

We kicked off with a week-long design sprint at Shorebox HQ. During this time we aligned on goals and a project plan.

From there, we commenced the product design process building off the ideas from our sprint.

I brought in my friends at Fuzzco for help with naming, branding, and photography.

Solution

We ended up with a simple, food-first user experience that allows the delicious meals to be front and center.

The core of the mobile app is the menu, allowing users to quickly and easily create their orders, while also providing a deep dive on each dish.

We also created a fun timer that helped guide people through the process of warming the food.

A tool to power the operation

Shorebox also needed a tool to manage their order workflow, from receiving orders, to cooking the food, to fulfillment.

I took a deep dive into their operations, spending time at their kitchen facility and interviewing key stakeholders from the management, kitchen staff, and delivery drivers.

The admin panel we landed on empowers the entire team to plan, cook, pack, and deliver orders with a simple and easy to use interface.

Results

The work we did enabled Shorebox to launch to their first set of customers in Silicon Valley. As the service grew, I was brought in to help them update and evolve the product design.
